Almost 33 years after the fact, we can rely on the win probability chart at Baseball-Reference.com to note the Red Sox had a 99 percent chance of winning the World Series when they led the Mets by two runs with two outs and nobody on in the bottom of the 10th inning of Game 6 on Oct. 25, 1986.
But for anyone watching the game in real time, it sure felt like 100 percent — such a sure thing, there was champagne in the visiting locker room at Shea Stadium, NBC aired a graphic naming Marty Barrett the player of the game, the World Series MVP trophy was being prepared for Bruce Hurst and the scoreboard at Shea Stadium briefly aired a message congratulating the Red Sox on their world championship.
The Red Sox were one pitch away from victory — and the Mets one pitch away from defeat — 16 times over a span of four batters. With one more out, Bill Buckner and Mookie Wilson would have become footnotes to a cathartic championship for the Red Sox, and a historic disappointment for the Mets.
